Where does the name Île-Rousse come from?

Historical origins

Île-Rousse was founded in 1758 by Pasquale Paoli. Its name originates from the red rocks of La Pietra Island, which glow beautifully at sunset. As the capital of eastern Balagne, the town welcomed its first inhabitants as early as the 6th millennium BC. Blending an exceptional architectural heritage with unspoiled nature, it is now highly appreciated for its idyllic setting. Located along the Mediterranean coastline, it is home to dreamlike beaches.

The La Pietra Lighthouse

Highest point

During your stay at a campsite near Île-Rousse, be sure to include the La Pietra Lighthouse among the must-see landmarks. Built in 1857, it marks the entrance to the north-western coastline of Corsica. It stands on the highest point of La Pietra Island, which is connected to Île-Rousse by a causeway. The site consists of a square tower set on a base of the same shape. The structure is painted white and topped with a green lantern. Altogether, it offers a magnificent view over the Balagne coastline, making it the perfect spot for a romantic moment at sunset.

The covered market hall

Local flavors

The covered market hall is located right in the center of Île-Rousse. It was established in 1846. Listed as a historical monument since 1993, it was built in the style of an ancient temple.
Its purpose has remained unchanged over the years: to provide a covered space for the trade of fresh products. The building therefore welcomes local producers every morning. On site, you can find a wide range of Corsican products such as honey, cured meats, cheeses, fish, lobsters, and more.
