Overview of the Lavezzi Islands

Wild coves

At the southernmost tip of Corsica, the Lavezzi Islands archipelago comes into view. This group of islands, shared with Sardinia, lies 10 kilometres south-east of Bonifacio, within the Natural Reserve of the Strait of Bonifacio. The Lavezzi Islands are made up of numerous islands and islets, the main ones being Lavezzu Island and Cavallo Island. Lavezzu Island, covering an area of 0.64 km², is renowned for the diversity and beauty of its seabed, as well as for the presence of unique animal species. Cavallo Island, on the other hand, extends over 1.1 km² and has become a popular destination for wealthy personalities.

The Lavezzi Islands also include the islets of Sperduto, Ratino Island and Piana Island.

What to do on the Lavezzi Islands?

Active nature

The Lavezzi Islands form a haven of wild and unspoiled nature, inviting visitors to explore. Beyond their dream beaches, a wide range of activities awaits travelers in this corner of Corsica.
With your family, follow the marked trails for a charming hike through the maquis, taking time to observe the endemic flora and fauna. Plan a picnic in a breathtaking natural setting, with views over Bonifacio, Porto-Vecchio and the impressive Corsican cliffs. During your walk, you will also pass the memorial dedicated to the victims of the sinking of La Sémillante.

With children, enjoy a boat trip to admire the panoramic views of the islands and islets, and perhaps even spot dolphins. Then explore the seabed by snorkeling or scuba diving to discover the rich and colorful marine life of this unique part of Corsica. Each of these activities promises unforgettable memories and a total immersion in the wild beauty of the Lavezzi Islands.

The most beautiful beaches of the Lavezzi Islands

Crystal-clear beaches

Cala Lazarina is one of the most attractive beaches in the Lavezzi Islands, despite sometimes heavy crowds during the high season. Highly popular with boaters, it welcomes numerous boats and offers an excellent anchorage point. Achiarina Beach, known for its fine sand, also attracts many visitors; to enjoy a bit more peace and quiet, it is recommended to move slightly towards the ends of the beach, while remaining cautious of the rocks in the water. More peaceful, Chiesa Beach is ideal for those seeking a setting without boats on the horizon: large rocks close to the shore form a natural barrier, creating a particularly unspoiled atmosphere. By exploring further around the Lavezzi Islands, you will discover less crowded coves just as charming, such as Cala di u Lioni, Cala di Chiorneri and Cala di Veccia. Access to the beaches of Cavallo Island is more restricted. Boats do not dock there, and the island caters to a high-end clientele, with its private villas and single luxury hotel.

A walk on the Lavezzi Islands

Nature trails

Lavezzu Island can be explored through its many walking trails. Accessible to everyone, the island is characterized by a relatively flat topography. A walk of one to two hours is enough to complete a full circuit of the island. As you walk, you will be surrounded by sand dunes, cliffs, and areas of maquis and scrubland. These diverse landscapes showcase the ecological richness of this island within the Lavezzi Islands. Take time to admire the ornithological diversity, where species such as the European shag, the peregrine falcon and the Audouin’s gull thrive.
It is important to remember that the island is a protected natural reserve, and that preserving this exceptional heritage depends on respecting a few essential rules. During your walk, make sure to stay on marked paths, avoid climbing rocks, and do not collect plants, animals or minerals, in order to contribute to the long-term protection of the Lavezzi Islands.
